Seasiders targeting Premier Cup success

FELIXSTOWE & Walton United have their sights on Suffolk Premier Cup success.

FELIXSTOWE & Walton United have their sights on this season’s Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup.

The Seasiders, who lost 2-0 in last season’s final to Needham Market, defeated Mildenhall Town 4-0 in Wednesday’s second-round tie to book their place in the last eight along with Ipswich Town, who saw off Cornard United 6-1.

A depleted Mildenhall side held firm until Josh Mayhew headed the home team in front after 40 minutes, before Cameron Forde-Brown curled home a 25-yard free-kick in the 53rd minute.

Three minutes later Charlie Warren cut in from the right and sent a low shot into the bottom far corner, and substitute Sam Ford rounded off the scoring in time added on, controlling a lofted pass from Noel Aitkens before lobbing over keeper Josh Pope.

After seeing off fellow Isthmian North side Mildenhall, manager Stuart Boardley said Felixstowe, who have never won the Suffolk Premier Cup before, are keen to do so.

He said: “We didn’t rest players tonight as it is a competition we want to go far in and we want to win and I know Felixstowe have been the bridesmaids several times now before my time and during my time.

“It is certainly one we are keen on winning as Crumpy (assistant manager Andy Crump) said before the game as players you want to win these things and you are remembered for what you win and you won’t be remembered for coming second.”

Boardley was pleased with his side’s display coming off the back of a disappointing 1-0 loss at Brightlingsea Regent in Isthmian North.

“Mildenhall came with a game plan to frustrate, sit in and make it difficult and try to hit us on the break which is what a lot of teams are doing to us at the moment and we are quite accustomed to it.

“Brightlingsea at the weekend didn’t go so well for us, as we didn’t break the lines so well, and we spoke tonight about it and we knew that would be how Mildenhall set up and I think we did it a lot better,” he said.

Boardley was pleased with the quality of his side’s four goals too.

“Excellent goals, good moves, great finishes, so really pleasing and to be honest with you the pleasing thing for me as a manager was our general play and the way we got through the lines and created those chances that we have perhaps struggled with a little bit of late.

“To get four goals against a well-drilled and well-organised Mildenhall side was really pleasing.”

An Ipswich Town XI were comfortable 6-1 winners at Cornard United, who were playing in the competition for the first time in 28 years following their promotion back to Step 5.

Cornard took the lead after five minutes through Harry Shawyer, but a young Town side then took control at Blackhouse Lane, Jamie Mauge equalising after ten minutes, before a Rio Morgan penalty put Ipswich ahead in the 23rd minute.

Jesse Nwabueze netted Town’s third after 55 minutes and Luke Towler added the fourth ten minutes later. Charlie Compton made it five in the 68th minute and Mauge rounded off the scoring with ten minutes remaining.

Felixstowe and Ipswich Town join AFC Sudbury, Brantham Athletic and Ipswich Wanderers as confirmed sides in the last eight of this season’s competition.

The tie between holders Needham Market and Long Melford, which was postponed on Tuesday, will now be played on Tuesday, October 8th, kick-off 7.45pm.

No new date has yet been confirmed for the match between Hadleigh United and Lakenheath or the outstanding first-round match between Bury Town and Leiston, with the winners due to face Lowestoft Town in round two.

The draw for the quarter-finals will be broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk on Friday from 6.30pm and released simultaneously on the Suffolk FA X feed.
