Premier Cup Needham Mkt Long Melford Oct 2024 1

Record-breaking night for holders

NEEDHAM Market enjoyed a record-breaking evening in the Suffolk Premier Cup.

NEEDHAM Market manager Kevin Horlock said he demanded his players retained their intensity that led to a record-breaking evening in the Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup.

The holders defeated Long Melford, who play three levels below them, 12-0 at the Ecologic Stadium Blooomfields in Tuesday’s second-round match to record the club's biggest ever win.

Luke Ingram netted four and there were eight different goalscorers as Needham surpassed their previous best 10-1 win at Ipswich Wanderers in an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie in 2007.

Horlock said of the relentless intensity the home team maintained throughout the 90 minutes: “That is something I demanded off them. We have got levels and we have got to stick to that.

“I felt for Long Melford a little bit. It was obviously a mis-match as we are several divisions above them now, but it was important that we showed that and I thought the lads did that.”

Ingram opened the scoring after nine minutes, but there was little sign of what was to come in the opening half-an-hour as the Vanarama National League North side failed to add to their tally.

Ben Hunter drilled home the second on 31 minutes and then five more goals followed in a frantic ten-minute spell prior to the interval.

Ingram made it three on 36 minutes and added a fourth after 40 minutes, before toe-poking home his fourth of the night a minute later. Tevan Allen (43 mins) then got in on the act and Dan Morphew made it seven in first-half stoppage time.

Substitute Seth Chambers (62 mins) fired home the eighth and stand-in skipper Dan Morphew netted the ninth from outside the penalty area in the 68th minute.

Jamie McGrath got the goal he deserved after 79 minutes and Dylan Williams swept home three minutes later, before Nico Valentine prodded home number 12.

The Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division side went close to getting a consolation goal a couple of times, Marcus Garnham saving low down to his left from lively substitute Josh Fenton Jones, who was also thwarted by a last-ditch tackle from Kyle Hammond.

Horlock, whose side are aiming for a fifth successive victory in the competition, added: “I am a little bit frustrated – I know it sounds terrible – but it should have been more.

“We have had chances and when it got sloppy and too easy they have had a couple of half chances as well, so there is still stuff that niggles away at me inside, but that is the nature of the beast and that is why I am the manager – I want to demand the best off the players, but I can’t really grumble.”

Needham will now be at home to Ipswich Wanderers in the quarter-finals of this season's competition.
