Brantham will not fear the Seasiders
BRANTHAM Athletic will not fear Felixstowe & Walton United in their Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup tie.
The Blue Imps, who are a Step 5 side, host The Seasiders in the first of this season’s quarter-final ties at Brantham Leisure Centre on Tuesday evening, kick-off 7.45pm.
Brantham saw their eight-match winning streak ended on Saturday when they drew 0-0 at home to Walsham-le-Willows in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division.
Felixstowe, who play at step higher in Isthmian North, produced an impressive win 6-1 at Bishop’s Stortford in the first-round proper of the Isuzu FA Trophy against a side who last season were a National League North (Step 2) side. Brantham’s joint manager Jack Sibbons, who has recently come out of retirement and helped to keep a fourth clean in the last five games, said after Saturday’s match: “Felixstowe & Walton are a very good side.
“You never know, they may rest a few or they may not, but we will have a decent crowd down here, which helps, and a few of our boys are just young lads who have never experienced things like that, so it will be great for them.
“We won’t fear them. We will give them the respect they deserve, and we will put another shift in as we have done today.”
Bury Town and Leiston play their twice-postponed first-round tie on Tuesday night knowing that the winners will host Lowestoft Town in round two.
Cole Skuse’s side lost 2-0 at home to Waltham Abbey on Saturday and were knocked off the top of the Isthmian North table.
Skuse sees the match as a good marker for his side against opponents who currently sit 14th in the Southern League Premier Central Division.
Leiston were without a game on Saturday but have taken seven points out of a possible nine from their last three matches, all away from home.
Skuse said: “It’s a great test. We know quite a few people across at Leiston in terms of the coaches and managerial staff and obviously Ollie Yun, who was here last season, has gone across to Leiston.
“It’s a club we follow closely because there are a lot of connections with the football club. We played them in pre-season and they are a very good footballing side with a lot of talented boys withing their group.
“It’s a great test for us and will give a marker of where we are at, albeit it is very early in the season, against a good team.”
There is one other tie on Tuesday – the second-round meeting between Hadleigh United and Lakenheath at the Millfield. The winners will be away to AFC Sudbury in the last eight.
There is also one county cup fixture on Wednesday as Long Melford Under-23s host Wickham Market Reserves in the Portable Space Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup Second Round under the lights at Stoneylands.
