Three sides through so far in Senior Cup

THREE teams have already booked their places in round two of the Suffolk Senior Cup.

THREE teams have already booked their places in round two of this season’s CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup.

Haughley United, Henley Athletic and Waveney all enjoyed good wins in their ties on Tuesday night ahead of the majority of the first-round matches taking place on Saturday.

Both the 2022-23 finalists are already out of this season’s competition.

Winners Framlingham Town went down 2-0 to Fosters Solicitors Anglian Combination League Premier Division opponents Waveney, who are third bottom, under the lights at Lowestoft Town FC.

Meanwhile, Macron SIL Senior Division Haughley United, who lost 7-0 at home to Trimley Red Devils last Saturday, upset 2022-23 runners-up AFC Sudbury Reserves, winning the penalty shoot-out 5-3 following a goalless draw.

Henley Athletic, who have yet to feature in a Senior Cup Final, enjoyed a 3-2 win on the 3G pitch at The New Croft against Haverhill Borough.

There’s one further tie on Friday night as mid-table Essex & Suffolk Border League Premier Division side Sudbury Sports host Haverhill Rovers, who are currently second in Division One North of the Thurlow Nunn League.

That leaves ten ties on Saturday, which feature three teams playing in the Senior Cup for the first time and one returning after several years’ absence.

Newcomers Bacton United 89 have been handed a tough task away to holders Trimley Red Devils, while Muford & Wrentham will make their bow at Leiston St Margarets.

The third side debuting in the competition are Kings Park Rangers, who have affiliated to Suffolk FA this season after switching grounds to play at Blackhouse Lane, where they are groundsharing with landlords Cornard United FC.

Kings Park Rangers, who currently top the ESBL Premier Division with 21 points from eight games, host SIL Senior Division side Stowupland Falcons.

Seven-times winners Grundisburgh return to the competition for the first time since the 2018-19 season with an away tie at Anglian Combination Premier Division side Beccles Town.

Brandon Town, who won 3-2 at Waveney last Saturday, travel to the Victory Ground in Bury St Edmunds to face Sporting 87. Brandon Town (navy & blue shirts) are pictured above in action versus Waveney (yellow & white shirts) in last Saturday’s match.

This weekend also sees the launch of a new competition – the Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Shield alongside the Veterans’ Cup, which kicks-off on Friday evening as Woodbridge Town take on Oulton United at Notcutts Park.

Holders Ransomes Sports host AFC Hoxne in one of eight ties taking place on Sunday afternoon.

Twenty-seven teams have entered the inaugural Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Shield, with 11 first-round matches scheduled for Sunday.
