Woodpeckers on a good run of form

WOODBRIDGE Town face Ipswich Wanderers in the Suffolk Premier Cup on a good run of form.

WOODBRIDGE Town head to Ipswich Wanderers in the Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup on a good run of form.

The Woodpeckers, who have won their last four matches in a row, face Wanderers at Humber Doucy Lane on Tuesday night in the second round of the competition for the third season in a row.

The Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division side will be aiming to extend their winning run against their hosts who play a step higher in the Pitching In Isthmian North.

Woodbridge manager Luke Hyam said: “We have done well and want to keep that momentum going, and although the opposition have not been as strong as some sides, you can only beat what is in front of you.

“The match against Ipswich Wanderers will be more of a test than the last four games have been for us.

“Both in football and in life confidence plays a massive part, and when you get on a run it makes a difference, and when you are on a good run of form you fancy your chances.

“We have a team with four or five 18 and 19-year-olds and the biggest problem with young players is that they are not consistent, but we have more energy, more flair and more of a goal threat this season.

“We struggled in the final third of the pitch last season after we lost Mark Ray around this time last year, but Joe McNeil has come in from Leiston and has been superb for us so far.”

Wanderers, who sit 14th in the table, had eight players missing through injury on Saturday as they drew 2-2 at home to Redbridge.

Hyam said: “I didn’t realise that they had so many injury problems, but they are a Step 4 club with a bigger budget so are in a stronger position than us.

“However, as long as we stay compact and defensively sound, I think we can be a threat going forward.

“It will be a good match-up and a good opportunity for us to see where we are at against a Step 4 club.”

Wanderers have won the previous two meetings 1-0 and 2-1 and Hyam said: “It is strange how we have drawn Wanderers three years running at this stage of the competition and each time away from home.

“I always enjoy going up against Ipswich Wanderers. They are a good team who have improved their facilities and pitch.”

Wanderers (blue shirts) are pictured in action above versus Felixstowe & Walton United (red & white striped shirts) in Isthmian North.

The tie is one of four on Tuesday evening, with holders Needham Market hosting Long Melford and two all-Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division clashes as Brantham Athletic meet Kirkley & Pakefield and Hadleigh United take on Lakenheath.

There are two further second-round matches on Wednesday evening as Cornard United play Ipswich Town and Felixstowe & Walton Utd tface fellow Step 4 side Mildenhall Town.

There were just three first-round matches in the Portable Space Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup on Saturday which yielded 18 goals.

Henley Athletic Reserves won 6-1 at Bacton United 89 Reserves and Mutford & Wrentham Reserves were 4-0 winners at Stowupland Falcons Reserves.

The third match saw East Bergholt United Reserves overcome Trimley Red Devils 5-2 to book their place in the second round. The draw will be announced later this week.
