AFC Kesgrave aiming for double cup joy

ANOTHER busy weekend of county cup semi-final action lies in store.

ANOTHER busy weekend of county cup semi-final action lies in store.

After this season’s Parkers Pitches Suffolk Junior Cup ties on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, the Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup and Shield take centre stage on Sunday.

AFC Kesgrave could complete a county cup semi-final double. Their first team face Cockfield United in the Suffolk Junior Cup on Friday, before their Over-35s side take on Bury Town in the Suffolk Veterans’ Cup.

While AFC Kesgrave have won the Suffolk Junior Cup twice in the past seven seasons, the club have yet to reach a Suffolk Veterans’ Cup Final.

The competition has largely been dominated by clubs whose first team play at Step 5 of the Non-League pyramid or above since it was introduced in the 2008-09 season.

Whitton United won the competition four seasons in a row, while Woodbridge Town have three wins to their name and each of Bury Town, Kirkley & Pakefield and Leiston have two wins apiece.

Stowupland Falcons, who defeated Kirkley & Parkfield 2-1 in the 2010-11 final and Ransomes Sports, last year’s winners, have first teams playing outside of the National League System.

Ransomes Sports will be looking to take a step closer to back-to-back wins in the competition when they meet Whitton Colts in a repeat of last season’s final, which they won 5-1 on ‘Suffolk Super Sunday’ at Needham Market FC. Framlingham Town, whose Under-23 side booked their place in the Portable Space Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup Final last weekend, will be aiming for their own club double.

Their Over-35 side entertain Old Newton United in the Suffolk Veterans’ Shield Semi-Finals as do Capel Plough, who host Sporting 87.

All four sides will be keen to progress to the final and become the first team to lift the shield in its inaugural season.
