U18s Bow Out Of FA County Youth Cup

TWO goalkeeping errors proved costly as Suffolk FA bowed out of this season’s FA County Youth Cup.

Striker Tom Thulborn scored a hat-trick as Cambridgeshire FA won 4-3 at Histon FC on Thursday in a match in which Suffolk created the lion’s share of the chances.

Suffolk led 2-1 at the interval, but two mistakes by goalkeeper Luca Collins saw the home team take the lead and, after adding a fourth, Cambridgeshire clung on to win.

Cambridgeshire took the lead after just four minutes, Thulborn breaking clear in the inside right position and firing low past Collins and into the far corner.

The visitors were level within two minutes, Tommy Robinson’s teasing cross being turned into his own net by home defender Toby Peters.

Suffolk started to look the more threatening side, with Kane Munday, Robinson and Callum Watson linking up well in midfield.

Cambridgeshire keeper Kieran Petty produced a fine one-handed save low to his left to keep out a first-time effort from James Blades following another Robinson cross in the 14th minute.

Munday then drilled a shot against the base of the near post after a wayward pass by Peters five minutes later, with Blades stabbing the rebound straight at Petty.

Suffolk were almost made to pay when James Carragher lost possession dribbling out of defence and Harvey Bullin’s effort was deflected wide.

Collins then saved from Thulborn and Bullin’s follow-up was just wide as Cambridgeshire sought to regain the lead.

Suffolk took the lead in time added on in the first half when a neat exchange of passes between Robinson and Munday set Robinson free to tuck the ball past Petty.

It stayed that way until the 64th minute when Collins missed his punch as he came to clear a free-kick taken by Petty and the ball dropped for Thulborn to lash home into an unguarded goal.

Seven minutes later, the hosts scored a carbon copy of their second goal, Collins failing to clear Petty’s free-kick and Thulborn rammed home.

Inbetween the AFC Sudbury stopper had produced a splendid save low to his left after another free-kick into the heart of the Suffolk penalty area skimmed off the head of one of his defenders.

Cambridgeshire added a fourth in the 77th minute when Charlie Tunnell rose well to send a glancing header inside the far post from Max Cato’s left-wing corner.

Suffolk refused to lie down and reduced the deficit when Watson, who worked tirelessly in midfield, fired home from 25 yards.

A superb reaction save by Petty after Callum Vincent flicked Munday’s left-wing cross goalwards at the near post prevented an equaliser three minutes later.

The visitors had one last chance in the 90th minute, the ball reaching the unmarked Vincent at the far post but his goal-bound effort was blocked.

The two teams are pictured above, with Suffolk in the maroon shirts and Cambridgeshire the light blue shirts, shaking hands before kick-off.
