Fourteen teams in Junior Cup action
FOURTEEN teams will be bidding to reach the Total Football Suffolk Junior Cup Quarter-Finals on Saturday.
They will be looking to join Puddlebrook 68, who are already through to the last eight by virtue of opponents Bramford Road Old Boys withdrawing from the competition
Puddlebrook 68 were one of two teams to score five times in the last round – the other team were Bacton United 89, who will have home advantage against Carlton Colville Town.
Sporting 87, who have had two odd-goal victories so far, would settle for a third at Lakenheath Casuals if it ensures their progress.
Mutford & Wrentham required penalties to win at Wickham Market in round two, will now have home advantage against Thurston.
A further 30 teams still harbour hopes of reaching this season’s McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup Final.
Twenty-eight of those go head-to-head in 14 third-round ties on Saturday.
Barton Mills and Coddenham Athletic Reserves both withdrew from the competition this week, meaning opponents Bramford United and Grundisburgh Reserves receive walkovers through to the fourth round.
Among those sides looking to join them will be Unity FC, the Ipswich-based team who draw their players from a variety of countries. They make the short trip across town to face Ipswich Exiles.
Four teams – AFC Kesgrave, Sporting 87, Stanton and Stowupland Falcons – have reserve teams playing in the Primary Cup as well as the Junior Cup, so will be hoping for a double celebration come Saturday tea-time.
Action is pictured above from last season's McDonald's Suffolk Primary Cup Final between Elmswell (black & white striped shirts) and Melton United (red shirts) at Stowmarket Town FC. Melton United won 4-3.
It’s the quarter-final of the HomeStore Self Storage Suffolk Women’s Cup on Sunday afternoon.
Needham Market Reserves, who host Haverhill Rovers, have a tough job on their hands if they are to join their first team in reaching the final four, after the withdrawal of Waveney.
Rovers have not featured in the final since the 2010-11 season, while Bungay Town, who visit last season’s losing finalists Brett Vale, have never before contested the final.
Holders Ipswich Town, who played at the home of Premier League Southampton last Sunday, will head to the more humble abode of East Bergholt United’s Grandish Road in the day’s other tie.
Sunday afternoon also sees seven ties scheduled in the third round of the Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup.
A reminder that no spectators are allowed if a match is taking place on private land. Spectators are permitted if the match is taking place on public land but you should check with the host club first before attending.
