Mellis aiming for fifth time lucky!
IT’S the first of this season’s county cup finals – four finals all on one day!
Bloomfields, home of Needham Market FC, is once again hosting the Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Cup, Shield, Trophy and Veterans’ Cup on the same day.
The Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Cup Final is an all-Bury & District Sunday League affair as Moreton Hall Youth Ferals line-up against Mellis.
Moreton Hall Youth Ferals currently occupy fourth place in Division One, while their opponents are three places below in seventh.
Moreton Hall reached the final of this competition for the first time last season only to lose 3-1 to Kitchener Taverners.
They overcame Borussia Martlesham, who reached the quarter-finals of this season’s FA Sunday Cup before losing 1-0 at St Joseph’s of Luton, in their semi-final.
Mellis, on the other hand, will be appearing in their fifth final and are still searching for their first win.
They have been in impressive goalscoring form en route to the final, finding the net six times in both their quarter-final and semi-final ties.
Mellis (blue shirts) are pictured on the attack against Kitchener Taverners (red shirts) in the 2017-18 Sunday Cup Final at Needham Market FC. Kitchener Taverners won 4-1.
It’s an East versus West final in the Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Shield.
BDSL side Bacton United 89 will take on against Ipswich Sunday Football League opponents Rushmere & Diamonds.
It’s just 12 months ago that Bacton United 89 lifted the Suffolk Sunday Trophy, courtesy of a 3-0 victory in the final over AFC Claydon, so they will be looking to make it two county cup wins in two years.
Rushmere & Diamonds, meanwhile, were runners-up in this competition in the 2019-20 season, and will be determined to go one better this time around.
A first county cup final awaits BDSL side AFC Dragonfly, who are fifth in Division Three, in the Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Trophy.
They will be playing ISFL Division Two side Taverners, who have been enjoying the most successful season in the club’s history since their formation in 1967.
The Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup pits Haverhill Rovers of the Cambridgeshire County Veterans’ League against Woodbridge Town side of the Norfolk & Suffolk Veterans’ League.
Mark Lovell scored four times for Rovers in their 5-0 victory over last season’s losing finalists Lowestoft Town in their last four tie.
It will be Rovers’ first appearance in the final since winning the competition in the 2013-14 season thanks to a 2-1 victory over Capel Plough.
They are up against a Woodbridge Town side who had contested seven consecutive finals up until last season, albeit winning just two of them and losing three years in a row to Whitton United.
