Kestrels wary of paying the penalty
ONLY two of the 12 sides in McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup action this weekend have previously won the cup.
Six of the eight third-round ties are scheduled for Saturday afternoon, with the other two set for early in the New Year.
Redgrave Rangers won the competition in the 2008-09 season, defeating Salvation Army 1-0 in the final.
The Macron SIL Division Three side are at home to Cockfield United Reserves, who play in Division Four.
The only other former winners involved on Saturday are current holders Coddenham Athletic, who have required penalty shoot-outs to progress past Sporting 87 ‘A’ and Brantham Athletic Development.
Coddenham (4th) travel to fellow SIL Division Four side Kesgrave Kestrels Reserves (8th) hoping to keep their grip on the trophy, with the home team no doubt wary of the tie being decided on spot kicks.
Coplestonians Reserves lifted the cup in the 2003-04 campaign, and it is the club’s third team, Coplestonians Development, who will by trying to emulate that feat this season.
Coplestonians Development sit second in SIL Division Four after six wins out of seven and are at home to Ipswich Vale Exiles, who have won all seven of their league games so far in Division Six.
Grundisburgh’s first team have a home quarter-final tie in the Parkers Pitches Suffolk Junior Cup to look forward to in February.
Their Reserve side will be aiming to keep the club on course of a county cup double when they entertain Cavendish.
